Gaming fails of this generation. Part 1 – Hardware.

I figured since the PS3 will be  dead after 20th Feb 2013, I figured now would be a good time to talk about what failed this gen and why. This gen has seen many failures so lets recap.  This part will focus on the hardware and accessories not games them selves.

The Wii

The Wii.

Why it failed: It failed because of the lack of decent games, a decent online multiplayer service and bad ports of other games.

Summary: You might be thinking that the Wii didn’t fail since it sold more than the PS3 and Xbox combined.  It sold well because at the time of release it was only £180 compared to the £300 Xbox and £500 PS3.   The Wii only appealed to housewives looking to shed a few pounds and little kids.  The only decent titles are Metroid prime Trilogy and The Wii version of Resident Evil 4.  I just couldn’t enjoy any other games on this console at all.

Kinect

Why it failed: Simple, there were no decent games that supported it fully.  Good games like Skyrim and Mass Effect 3 only used the microphone (Which was of shit quality), any games that did support it, didn’t work so well with Kinect.  It also spawned several other failures such as Star Wars Kinect and Fable the Journey.

Summary: Admittedly the Kinect had potential. It could have let us use computers like in Sci-Fi films, and would have probably been more successful if it had not been developed for games but for computers instead.   You also need a fairly large (empty) room to use kinect in.  It can help keep you moving and keep you fit I suppose that’s the only good thing going for it. To be honest its only fun to use if you don’t care about looking like a right idiot in front of people.

Xbox HD-DVD

Why it failed: Blu-Ray.

Summary: The HD-DVD player for Xbox would have been a handy feature to have if Blu-Ray hadn’t won what techies called “The format war”. So really it wasn’t a failure because it was bad, it was because of people’s preference.  However the device is not 100% useless, through some internet searching you can actually find HD-DVD’s.  You may even find some for cheap in your local CEX store.   However don’t expect to find any of the latest films in HD-DVD though.

PlayStation Move

Why it failed: Same reasons people didn’t like the Wii.

Summary: Sony thought that by copying the Wii they would make more sales on the PS3 but they were wrong. Lack of support on most games, lack of decent games that use it, price, and the camera all contributed to this failure.  At least Microsoft tried to get rid of the controllers altogether with Kinect. Oh and by the way you didn’t get the “Nunchuck” with it, you had to buy that separately.  However, the orb on the controller glows different colours …… yeah.

Smart Glass

Why it failed: Microsoft’s pathetic attempt at copying the WiiU before it was even released.

Summary: When I first heard of SmartGlass I thought that it would have some very interesting applications for games, however what we got was quite different….. all we got was a stripped down version of the Xbox live dashboard that didn’t have any purpose we could use it to control the Xbox …. but then again why would you?.  The games that it was supposed to work with like Halo 4, didn’t support it at all. If they had used it on Skyrim it could have made inventory management better.  Basically a poor mans Windows 8. At least the app is free ….. well technically no since you have to shell out for a phone or tablet to actually use it.

Thanks for reading. In the next part we’ll talk about the actual games that failed this gen.

  1. Whoa, whoa, whoa!

I don’t get this “Wii is for kids, moms and grandparents” argument – sure it is: if you ONLY buy software that targets those demographics. But there were a ton of fantastic Wii games!

As far as decent software goes:

    Dead Space: Extraction
    MadWorld
    No More Heroes 1 & 2
    Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles
    Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
    Xenoblade Chronicles
    The Last Story
    Muramasa: The Demon Blade
    Sin & Punishment: Star Successor
    Okami
    LoZ: Twilight Princess
    Monster Hunter Tri
    Red Steel 2
    Super Smash Bros. Brawl
    Tatsunoko VS. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars
    Super Paper Mario
    Little King’s Story
    Zack and Wiki
    Donkey Kong Country Returns
    Animal Crossing: City Folk
    Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
    Kirby’s Epic Yarn
    LoZ: Skyward Sword
    Super Mario Galaxy 1 & 2
    Punch-Out!!
    Rhythm Heaven Fever
    WarioWare: Smooth Moves

And that’s just off the top of my head. Wii catches a lot of flack for appealing to a casual market, and Nintendo has no one to blame but themselves, but calling it a failure is a stretch. In MY opinion.
