IRC Channel Information.

An IRC channel allows you to chat to people live over the internet. It is registered as #illage3 on Geekshed.

I’ve been constantly trying to embed my IRC chat into wordpress but wordpress does not seem to allow the use of embed codes so instead I am going to use this page to provide information on my IRC channel.

Where/how can you chat.

You can use any IRC client to chat on the channel. Below is a list of clients, most of them are cross platform, however you should check the site to make sure it will work for you.

X-Chat  - http://xchat.org/

Pidgin  - http://www.pidgin.im/     (A tutorial will be posted on connecting with this soon)

Trillain - http://www.trillian.im/ (Will be posting a tutorial on this soon)

Mibbit (Web App) - http://www.mibbit.com/      (No account needed, but is recommend to get one so you can auto join and connect to different channels)

mIRC (free but is nag ware until you pay for it) –  http://www.mirc.com/

Server and channel

Server: irc.geekshed.net

(irc.geekshed.net/6667 – If you are using a Desktop Client, Mibbit users won’t need this)

Channel: #illage3

More information

Make sure you either register or identify your self when you come into the chat, I have it set so only registered and identified users can chat. Some clients can do this automatically for you.

To register:  First do /nick <nick>  Then do  /ns register <password> <E-mail> and then confirm that E-mail.

To identify (Need to register first): /identify <password> You will only have 1 minute to do this before it changes your nick to unidentified.

Update: You have to be registered to chat. This is so we can deter spammers and fake accounts.

New!

I’ve added my Twitter stream to the channel, so now any time I tweet you’ll see it on the channel. At the moment I am still testing with this so it may or may not be removed at a later date.

Rules

  • No flooding. – Bot will Autokick  if you are flooding
  • No spamming – Will result in a kick, if you spam more than 3 times it will become a ban.
  • No insulting other users (Including racism and hate speech) – Will result in instant ban.
  • No nagging for Op – If you nag you won’t get it. I’ll give Op to people I can trust.
  • No Repeating – You will be kicked if you say the same thing 4 times in a row, after 5 kicks you will be autobanned. (This is also classed as Flooding)
  • Please speak in English as it is the primary language of many users in the chat.
You can however
  • Paste Links –  You can paste links but please do not post the same link more than once within 30 seconds of each other
  • Swearing – Swearing is allowed and will not be filtered.
  • Use different coloured text – Only use one colour at a time for one sentence.
  • Discuss anything – Within reason
  • Appeal against a ban – If you want I will allow you 5 minutes before a ban to appeal it.
  • Can post images and YouTube videos.
  • You do not have to ask permission to PM me (illage2).
  • Off topic discussion is allowed. (Within reason)
Channel Ops
Please do not argue or annoy the channel ops as they will likely kick or ban you depending on how bad things are. If you do wrong against a channel op, please apologise and move on. If you keep going on about it, I will personally ban you.
Channel Modes
If the channel gets too chaotic, I may have to put voiced only mode on. This means that only those with voice will be seen chatting. DO NOT ASK FOR VOICE! I will only give voice to regulars.
Geekshed Rules
GeekShed has its own set of rules that everyone including the ops has to follow while using the geek shed network.
Click the following link for more information.
Punishment Order
Here is what happens when you break the rules.
  • First Offense – Warning
  • Second Offense – Kick
  • Third Offense – Ban (24 hour)

Further offenses will result in a longer ban, and the bans can be permanent if you keep continuing.

FAQ
What can I do if I disconnect and can’t use my nick?
Use a different nick such as “illage3-temp” and then when on the chat do /ghost and then it should change your nick back to your original nick automatically. This will also automatically do the /identify ccommand for you.
What can I do if someone is using my nick?
I will use the kill command, but you must provide proof that you own the nick first. Or if they do not know your password their nick will change, and from there you can use the nick once again.
How long will the bans last?
It depends on how bad you broke the rules, I will try and keep you banned only for 24 hours but I am not afraid of perm banning people should it be required.
I hope you don’t abuse your power.
I will not abuse my power, if you think I am doing then by all means feel free to call me out on it. If there is a disagreement or any other trouble I am willing to hear all sides of the story first.
What does the bot do?
The bot is only there to auto kick flooders. I will however be adding future commands to it, some commands include auto-oping people. However I will be adding more commands to auto kick.
What does voice do?
If the chanel is set to +m those with voice can chat.
Do you give everyone admin and Op?
No, I only give people whom I can trust Op and Admin.
How do I get op and Admin?
You don’t. I will grant you voice but apart from that if your someone I don’t trust or don’t know then you’ll not be given Op and Admin powers.
Why does FireFox (Bot) get Op and Admin.
A bot needs them to kick flooders and perform other commands.
What about free speech.
I am a very leanient person, I don’t mind people giving their opinion, however if it gets to the point where insults and hate are thrown in then I will kick you. I will allow swearing, however racism will not be tolerated, nor will hate speech.
What about embbeding the chat into your blog?
At the moment I cannot as wordpress.com blogs are not allowed to use embed tags due to “security” reasons.
Why is it #illage3 and not #illage2?
Someone owns #illage2 already and I know it is not mine. I will ask around and see what is happening.
Is it free to chat?
Yes, you can register an account on Geekshed for free and chat for free.
What are the best browsers to use to chat on Mibbit?
I recommend FireFox, Google Chrome or Maxthon. However you can use another browser if you prefer, but I’ve found that mibbit works best on Google Chrome and FireFox. Google Chrome even has a web app of mibbit which you can get for free.
Do I need any plugins such as Flash to chat on Mibbit?
As far as I know you do not need any plugin’s to chat using mibbit, all you need is an updated browser, and a okayish internet speed.
Any decent Desktop IRC clients?
Yes, read the top of the page. Some (if not all) of them when set up correctly will negate the need for the /identify command, as they will automatically do it.
Can I use commands?
If your not an Op or Admin the only commands you can do are /me , /identify, /pm and !topic and /ignore and /unignore.  For more info do /msg nickserv HELP for more commands.
Uses:
/me(Example: illage2 is typing)
!topic – Displays the topic of the channel.
/pm- PM’s a user however make sure you ask permission first unless you are PMing me.
/ignore <nick> – Ignores a nick so you can’t see what they are saying.
/unignore – Un-ignores a nick.
The PM command isn’t working.
If you can see the user list (usually on the right) just click on a user and click Send PM or you can double click the user name, however this all depends on the client you are using.
Is my IP address exposed?
Only me (illage2) and the ther Admin/Ops can see the IP address you are using. We can also see your ISP, again though only a selected few people can see this.
Do you keep logs of the chat?
Only when I think it is needed. An example of such need would be when there is trouble going on. I may need to take a log as proof that someone said something. Anything such as IP addresses and other personal info will not be logged for security and legal  reasons.
Can I put put personal information such as my real name and general location?
If you want to, however be aware that you put out this information at your own risk and I (and others) cannot be held accountable if someone misuses the information. This just doesn’t apply to IRC it applies to anything on the internet. However I am still bound by the Data Protection Act, and therefore yur personal informtion will be protected (unless you give out your own information)
Can I record the chat for a YouTube video?
Not sure why you would want to, but if so please let me or another admin/op know about it in advance.
Can I share the channel information such as the server and channel name with people on Social networks?
Go ahead, but make sure you link them to this page first, so that they know the rules.
